The Wrong-Help Problem: Why a Strategy Deck Won't Fix an Operations Issue
You hired consultants, got a beautiful presentation, and six months later nothing changed on the ground. The problem was not the advice — it was the kind of help you bought.
## The problem
A growing business hits a wall. Deliveries are late, managers are firefighting, margins are thinning. The founder brings in a consulting firm. Weeks of interviews follow, then a polished deck arrives: market maps, a new org chart, a five-year strategy. Everyone nods. Six months later, the daily reality on the floor is unchanged.
This is the wrong-help problem: buying strategy consulting for what is actually an operations problem.
## Strategy problems vs operations problems
The distinction matters because the remedies are completely different:
- **A strategy problem** sounds like: "Which market should we enter? Should we launch this product line? Are we positioned correctly?" - **An operations problem** sounds like: "Why does delivery slip every month-end? Why does quality depend on who is on shift? Why do I have to chase every payment?"
If your questions are the second kind, you do not need a new direction. You need the current direction executed reliably. That is operations consulting and business process improvement — working inside the business, with your team, on the way work actually flows.
## What effective operations help looks like
Genuine operations work has a few recognisable signs:
- It starts by observing how work gets done, not by interviewing leadership alone. - It produces working SOPs, KPIs and review rhythms — not just recommendations. - It develops your managers rather than creating dependence on the consultant. - It has a visible, dated plan — a 90-day transformation roadmap with owners and measures.
## The question to ask before buying help
Before engaging any advisor, ask: "What will physically change in how my business runs 90 days from now?" If the answer is a presentation, keep looking. If the answer names processes, owners, numbers and rhythms, you are talking to the right kind of help.
